BSJ’s Feb. 14-16 opener to its 2014 repertory season is dubbed Neoclassical to Now and begins with a chestnut: Serenade by George Balanchine with music by Tchaikovsky. It was the Russian choreographer’s first ballet created in America, debuting in 1935 in New York. Ballet San Jose’s new principal dancer, Nathan Chaney, formerly a soloist with the Zurich Ballet, will make his Silicon Valley debut in Serenade’s two evening performances. Fittingly, Chaney’s repertoire ranges from classic to modern, from Nutcracker to Jerome Robbins’ Goldberg Variations. In 2010, he won gold medals for classical ballet and contemporary dance at the Cape Town International Ballet Competition in South Africa.
