In the United States, not so much, which is why “The Cosby Show” — for five straight years the nation’s most popular show during its 1984-92 run on NBC — often featured Cosby’s jazz-musician friends: drummer Art Blakey, trumpeter Gillespie, singer Betty Carter. “Because the music wasn’t being honored,” he explains. He offers up memories: in the early ’60s, working the hungry i nightclub in San Francisco’s North Beach (“Jackson and Kearny”), walking up the block on his breaks to catch Miles Davis or others at the Black Hawk. And then working the Gaslight in Greenwich Village (“116 MacDougal … $75 a week, 8 till 4 in the morning”) and taking time “between the two folk singers” on the bill to wander over to a nearby bar. There he was transfixed by “the eclectic musicians that I loved: Eric Dolphy and Reggie Workman, or the genius, the pianist Cecil Taylor.”.
A multi-generation San Francisco native, Yee is a rising young playwright on the national scene who won a Glickman Award for best play to premiere in the Bay Area in 2015 with her last play with SF Playhouse, the tragicomedy “in a word.” Locally her plays have been seen everywhere from Impact Theatre to AlterTheater to Z Space, and her “The Great pointe shoe bag, ballet shoe bag, dance bag, red, floral, ballerina bag Leap” is coming up later this season at American Conservatory Theater, “King of the Yees” stars the phenomenal Francis Jue, a fellow San Francisco native who recently starred in “Soft Power” at the Curran and has played Broadway in “Pacific Overtures,” “M, Butterfly” and “Thoroughly Modern Millie.” (Amusingly, this isn’t the first time he’s played a playwright’s father in a metafictional comedy, having done that in David Henry Hwang’s “Yellow Face” with TheatreWorks Silicon Valley in 2009.)..
The proceeds will also help increase the number of PJCC instructors who are breast cancer exercise specialists to help serve more women. The private, small group classes at PJCC, which is the only facility on the Peninsula to offer the Pink Ribbon Program, are open to all breast cancer survivors. Today, breast cancer is no longer viewed as an automatic death sentence, but instead considered a treatable illness, thanks in part of early prevention awareness and advanced treatment options. Preregistration is required for each class offered at the fundraiser ($20 each). Additional donations are gratefully accepted. To learn more, call 650-378-2703 or visit: www.pjcc.org/pink.
The council made its declaration to “put at ease those San Ramon Village residents who apparently believe Pleasanton wants to annex that development.”, Mayor Warren Harding made it clear that “city planning and annexation policies insofar as we can envision, do not include going north of Highway 50, We certainly have no thoughts of annexing San Ramon Village.”, What the city does look forward to, however, is extension of its zoning influence north to the pointe shoe bag, ballet shoe bag, dance bag, red, floral, ballerina bag highway west to the ridge of hills at the back of Castlewood, south and east to the projected new highway 108 from Scotts Corner through Isabel Avenue and on to Highway 50..
