A strange and spare collage drawn from Sophocles’ “Antigone,” this enigmatic 75-minute production revels in Carson’s lean and muscular poetry. Codirected by the stage auteur Mark Jackson and choreographer Hope Mohr, this postmodern stab at the ancient Greek tragedy is framed by almost trancelike movement that builds to eerie tableaux. Woven together with an uncompromising physicality, “Antigonick” mashes up ancient drama, modern dance and sculptural stage pictures with mixed results. Alternately hypnotic and impenetrable in its regional premiere at Shotgun Players’ Ashby Stage, it’s a gutsy, if uneven, work that demands a lot of its audience. Certainly, there is something about this tale of one woman’s civil disobedience that has caught the public imagination now, with two other productions, at Cutting Ball and African-American Shakespeare, also thrusting Sophocles into the spotlight. Carson’s remix of the myth runs through April 25, kicking off Shotgun Players’ season of all-female playwrights.
